S.S. Andrea Doria

In 1956, the S.S. Andrea Doria sank off the coast of Massachusetts. The luxury ocean liner contained a safe in the first-class section loaded with currency notes from its home port in Italy and its destination in the U.S.

The notes were recovered from the shipwreck and became coveted by collectors as unique shipwreck artifacts.

But not all of these notes were equal – a small handful of emergency issue World War II notes were found in the recovery and became ultra-collectable.

Hawaii & North Africa

The biggest hits in VaultBox Shipwrecked are the rarest finds from the shipwreck: Emergency Issue World War II notes. These notes combine the collectability of shipwreck artifacts with the real-world impact of World War II.

Standard issue Silver Certificates found in the shipwreck have a blue seal. But the WWII notes can be identified by their different seal colors – gold for North Africa, and brown for Hawaii.

These notes were still U.S. Dollars – but they were printed with special seal colors so they could be quickly recognized and demonetized in the event that the Allies lost control of Hawaii or North Africa during the war.

Today, these notes serve as reminders of the uncertainty of the outcome of the war – and collectables made even more desirable by their rare appearance in the shipwreck.
