1792 Half Disme
The first official coin produced by the United States
There are historic coins, and then there’s the 1792 Half Disme.
On July 11, 1792, Thomas Jefferson deposited $75 worth of silver to the newly authorized U.S. “Mint.” In reality, the Mint wasn’t yet open for operation. This silver spent the next two days in the cellar of a local saw maker named John Harper, where it was struck into Half Dismes, the first coinage produced under the Coinage Act of 1792.
Two days later, Thomas Jefferson took delivery of the 1,500 newly minted coins. Jefferson distributed the Dismes from that point, but exactly how is uncertain.
Only 200 to 400 examples of the legendary 1792 Half Disme are believed to still exist. With origins tracing back to Jefferson and a mighty status as the first official coin produced by the United States first, the biggest coin in Mosaic 2025 is one that every coin collector wants.
